Addington Square, Camberwell, South London

Near Burgess Park, well preserved Addington Square dates from the early nineteenth century.  Developed between 1810 and 1850, the square fell into decline and was close to being demolished in the 1970s. Number 33 (shown above) was occupied in the 1960s by South London gangsters the Richardson brothers, Charlie and Eddie, according to Bridge to Nowhere.

Highbury Place, Islington, North London

 


Overlooking the greenery of Highbury Fields, Highbury Place is a handsome and well-preserved Georgian terrace, which still has intact cast-iron railings and period lampposts. As it doesn't see much motorised traffic, Highbury Place is also a pleasant place to cycle or walk.

Pitfield Street, East London


Popular with cyclists, Pitfield Street runs north to south and retains some of its old London charm, despite losing a fine old pub - the Hop Pole - back in the eighties.

Shepherdess Walk, Central London



In the trendy neighbourhood of Hoxton, Shepherdess Walk runs down towards City Road. It is home to the Eagle Tavern, which dates from 1820 and features in a verse of the nursery rhyme Pop Goes the Weasel:

Up and down the City Road,
In and out the Eagle,
That's the way the money goes,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

Number 54 Farringdon Street, Central London

 

Handsome Number 54 Farringdon Street, which now houses GiGi's restaurant and bar, is Grade-II listed. Built in the 1860s from Portland Stone, this fine building abuts the Holborn Viaduct, which was built around the same time.

Unilever House, Blackfriars, Central London

Built in 1930 in a neo-classical style, Grade-II listed Unilever House has nine floors, a basement and a sub-basement that can house up to 4,000 staff. It is still the headquarters of Unilever, a consumer goods conglomerate.
