Le Jardin Secret, Rue Mouassine, Marrakesh, Morocco

A serene and verdant green space within Marrakesh's ancient medina, Le Jardin Secret is well worth a couple of hours of your time. Planted in the grounds of a palace that dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century, the gardens were opened to the public in 2020. The restored stone buildings, tiled pathways and ornate terraces retain the grandeur and opulence of the nineteenth century palace that replaced the original building complex, which was destroyed toward the end of the seventeenth century, after the decline of the Saadian dynasty.  In 1912, the palace came into the possession of Fez of al-Hajj Muhammad Loukrissi, the former head of the watchmakers’ guild in Marrakech.  After he died in 1934, the property fell into a state of disrepair. But thanks to some painstaking restoration work and expert horticulture, Le Jardin Secret is now both sumptuous and stylish.
