Built in 1190, the mosque in the old Kasbah district of Marrakech is very close to the city walls and to Bab Agnaou, one of the most striking gates into the Medina. The mosque itself is known for its high walls, which are lined with large pointed horseshoe arches and are crowned with merlons above a row of corbels. The minaret has a square base (8.8 metres per side), topped with a much smaller lantern (almost 4 metres per side).
